Learning about Soil
What We Learned Today October 30th, 2007Today I learned about what to not put in and what to put in the compost bin. Apple, banana peel, orange peels, and bread crusts can be recycled into soil. Candy, brownies, lollipops and gum can’t be recycled into soil.

Luke,
I’m glad that you are learning about composting because it is SO good for the garden, the soil, and the environment. Uncle Ted and I have a compost bin and it gives us really good soil . I also know that you can’t put meat, bones, and most processed dairy products into the compost bin. Oh, we have LOTS of worms now too!!!!!

Wow! This is great stuff as we are getting ready to start out own compost bin next summer!
I will have to check with my in house expert on what things we should put in the compost bin-Mary Squire

Hi Luke,
I am glad you are learning about soil and compost bins. I was wondering if you can put the body of a bear in the compost bin after you remove the fur and make a coat out of it. Do you know?

Hi buddy,
Maybe we can build a compost bin out by your fort in the backyard. See you later today.

Hi Luke,
You do some cool things at your school. I wish you could come to California and tell my principal all the wonderful things you learn and do at your school. I think my students could be as excited about learning new things as you are. We don’t get to do too much interesting and fun stuff as your school does. I’m so proud of you and amazed by all the things you know. Keep up the good work, buddy. Love, Grammie Wheeler

WOW! that is so cool, Luke. I have also heard that coffee grounds are excellent materials for a healthy compost heap. Make sure you keep your bin away from the house as flies LOVE it and they can stink. You don’t want to harvest flies, do you? But then again you can watch the progress and growth cycle of those inects, pretty fascinating, if not a bit gross.
Keep learning, I love the enthusiasm.

Luke,
I remember when I was a little boy I used to rake up all the leaves in the yard and put them into a compost heap out by the playhouse, then in the spring when it would rain we could hunt thru the pile and find HUGE earthworms!just remember to wash your hands after you play with the worms.enjoy your decaying matter, speaking of which how ’bout them eagles.
take care ,love -Uncle Vince

Wow Luke this sounds like a great project. I am a 7th Grade Math teacher in Naples and not only is this a great science project but there is a lot of math involved also. Your Aunt Pambo sent me this link and I wanted to respond. I tried to make a compost bin once but all I got was some “foreign matter” and some unwanted creatures in my yard. My neighbors were not real pleased with the odor either.
Keep up the good work!

hey now! I am so happy to see that you are learning to compost! You should ask your parents why you guys don’t recycle, it’s cool and mother earth is tired of all the trash filling up the landfills. love you and will see you for X-Mas!!!!!!
