Getting to Know Characters

Teachers No Comments »

The two main characters of our read aloud book Melvin Beederman The Revenge of the McNasty Brothers, have arrived in our classroom!

candace-1.jpgmelvin-1.jpgcandace-2.jpgmelvin-2.jpg

We’ve been talking about ways that readers get to know characters– we know what they look like (external characteristics) and we also get to know what they like, what they like to do, and what kind of person they are (internal characteristics.) In groups, students drew one of these two characters and listed the external characteristics on the outside of the picture, and the internal characteristics on the inside. They did a great job! We’ll continue to work on this in students’ independent reading.

Fun at Shaws

Teachers No Comments »

Our Shaws field trip was a blast. We went on a tour of the entire store and also spent some time on a scavenger hunt discovering weights and prices of many different foods. The students enjoyed taste-testing, playing with live lobsters and going behind the scenes in the freezer!

Here is what the kids thought about the trip:

I liked when we went in the big freeze box! – Anna and Luke B

Me and Ben couldn’t find an “e” word so we went to the sushi aisle and found an eel. - William

Captain Nemo threw out live lobsters! – Carter

I liked going in the big freezer where they stored ice cream. I wanted to stay in there. - Cooper

Me, Ryan, Carter and Cooper wanted to stay in the trailer truck and drive to Florida. - Ben M.

I always had wondered what was in the refridgerator and then we went in. -Luke S.

I liked going inside the refridgerator behind the milk case. – Gabby

I didn’t like when Butcher Rob cut up the chicken! - Ryan

I liked when the butcher cut up the chicken! – Hayden

I liked getting the cold chocolate milk. – Jacob

I didn’t like when the butcher cut up the chicken’s heart. – Alena

I liked going on the scavenger hunt. – Sophia

I liked when Captain Nemo slid the lobsters across the floor. And I learned how to put a lobster to sleep. – Dana

I DID NOT like when Captain Nemo threw the lobsters! And Ryan was trying to see which lobster was the tallest. – Troy

Check out some of our pics from the trip!

100_0762.jpgThen students got to sample all kinds of healthy foods made from pumpkins like pumpkin bread, pumpkin french toast, pumpkin soup, pumpkin smoothies, pumpkin seeds and pumpkin cake.

They made scrap books with pictures and recipes to remember the day.

Money

Teachers No Comments »

Next week, class 2OL will begin it’s study of money. We would like to use real change to enhance our learning experience. If possible, please send your child in with a zip lock bag of change with his or her name on it. We are asking for $2.00 in the form of: 10 pennies, 4 quarters, 6 dimes and 6 nickels. For those of you that already have, THANK YOU!

If you are unable contribute, we understand and will work something out for your son or daughter. Thank you for your help!

Math Strategy of the Week

Students, Teachers 1 Comment »

Each day students are solving problems in so many different ways. They share their strategies with classmates and with adults in the classroom. It’s important that the students try out new strategies to help them improve and become more efficient problem solvers. Playing with numbers,  pulling numbers apart and putting them back together help students to become stronger mental math thinkers. Each week I share at least one strategy  that a student has used to solve a problem. I try and share strategies that we may not have seen before or strategies that really seem to work for kids. These student strategies get posted on the wall for all to refer back to and try out.

This weeks strategy was used by Luke B. Thanks for sharing with us Luke!

Nutrition Time

Teachers 1 Comment »

This week we formally began our discussion on nutrition. The two essential questions we will be trying to answer are: What fuels your body? and Where does food come from?

This year the second grade team thought it would be a wonderful idea to have families share their favorite recipe ideas with us. We would like to some how organize your recipes and create a second grade cookbook book to send home with each student. Our hope is to gather a variety of healthy food recipes that represent all of the food groups. Therefore, thinking of a variety of recipes, not just baked goods, would be helpful. So, start  thinking about yummy, delicious and healthy recipes that you would like to share and more information will be coming soon.

Habits of Writers

Teachers 1 Comment »

We’ve been talking a lot about learning habits. Today, we talked about the habits that writers have. Together, we made the list that you see in the picture (if you click on it, it is easier to read.) Then students thought about what writing habits they have, and what makes writing easy and hard. They were unbelievably reflective! The pictures also show some habits we have like choosing a place to write where we can concentrate, and using books to get ideas and information for our writing.

We’re wondering what habits of writing you have? What makes writing easy or hard for you?
